On December 5th Millhopper Photography will be taking photos of your pets. Gerry and his wife, Donna, do a wonderful job capturing your dog's personality. They came 2 years ago and took photos and did a wonderful job. The picture of my dogs, Abby and Parker, next to my cash register is taken by them. If you think your dog won't stay still for a photography session you will be amazed what Gerry and Donna can do. I have a spastic spaniel, Miss Abby, who he captured beautifully. These photos make amazing gifts for the holidays or for any occasion. The prices are very affordable too!

November Events

November 15th-Paws for Pet rescue 5K at University of Florida to benfit Haile's Angels Rescue. For more information http://www.pawsforpetrescue.com/ The race begins at 8am sharp!

November 20th-Uptown Village off of 39th Ave will be having a Pet Fair. We will have a booth out there selling doggie treats and other goodies from the store. It is from 3-7pm.

November 21st- The Greater Gainesville Dog Fanciers Association is having their show at Westwood Middle School. The Match starts at 9am with obedience, rally, and canine good citizen testing. We will be out there selling our yummy dog treats!

Sweet Paws Bakery and doggie daycare will be very busy for the month of October. Here is the list of events that we will be attending and having. I hope everyone will come out and support these events:

Saturday, October 10th 10am to 2pm-National Pet Day

Local Rescue groups will have adoptions and Sweet Paws will be there with yummy treats and toys. There will be raffle prizes drawn every hour. This family fun event is at Nationwide Insurance on the corner of Williston Road and 34th Street. Don't forget to bring your dog!

Sunday, October 18th 11am to 5pm-Alachua Harvest Festival

There are over 160 vendors providing everything from handmade quilts to wood carved roses to temporary tatoos and of course Sweet Paws Bakery will be there selling yummy treats and items from the boutique! The afternoon is a warm, friendly venue for local entertainers who keep the crowd singing along all afternoon from two stages. We usually are set up in front of Conestoga's on Main Street in the city of Alachua.

Friday, October 23rd 6pm to 9pm-Oktoberfest in Haile Plantation Village Center

There will be lots of food, entertainment, and best of all the stores will be open for you to shop. Sweet Paws Bakery will still have Yappy Hour from 5:30-6:30pm with bobbing for turkey dogs. This event is fun for the whole family, there will be games for the kids set up along the street.

Saturday, October 24th 8am to 5pm- McIntosh 1890's Festival

This festival is a large festival that hosts over 250 vendors and an estimated 35,000 visitors. There will be lots of vendors, food, entertainment, and of course Sweet Paws Bakery. This festival is located in the heart of McIntosh. For more information: http://friendsofmcintosh.org/

The 35th Annual Micanopy Fall Harvest Festival

Many local artists, crafters, and musicians participate in this festival, as well as other artists from across the southeast. Along with the two hundred displays of arts and crafts there are many other attractions. The main stage plays host to a variety of good time music throughout the festival and an old time auction of items donated by participating vendors on Saturday afternoon. Sweet Paws Bakery will be having a Halloween Costume contest for the dogs! We will have contests for the scariest, cutest, most original, and the funniest costume starting at 6:30pm. During the party there will be bobbing for turkey hot dogs. Bring the kids too we will be passing out candy. Don't forget to check out our huge selection of costumes for the contest.

Lucy Weaver's Birthday Party at Sweet Paws Bakery

Lucy celebrated her first birthday at Sweet Paws Bakery with a big party for her and her friends. Here is the birthday girl, Lucy, wearing her pink festive collar. Lucy's brother Willy is laying in the background.

Lucy's party was catered by Sisters which is located in Haile Village Center. The food was delicious. Bacon wrapped cheese stuffed dates, huge shrimp, chicken and ham salad sandwiches were served to all the guests.

There was even a human cake that was decorated with fondant bones and of course a Carob Bone Cake decorated with BBQ bones for the dogs.

This is the fun part when Lucy gets to see, smell, and taste her cake. She even nibbled a couple of BBQ bones off before the cake was cut.

After the cake comes the opening of presents. Lucy was a lucky girl everyone was very jealous of her gifts. Some of her gifts were Tator the dog loving Gator, Brown with pink paw print ribbon large towel with a snail toy, and donation made to Haile's Angels made in Lucy's name.

Lucy was very thankful to her mom for throwing such a wonderful party!

First Day in New Expanded Store

Today was my first day in Sweet Paws Bakery's expanded location and it was wonderful. Some of my wonderful customers came to visit and explore the new location. The dogs seem to find the wood floors interesting (not able to run as fast on them compared to the carpet). The dogs really enjoyed the open space where they can roam and sniff out their favorite items. Some of the dogs that I enjoyed today: Winnie and Casey (2 Kerry Blue terriers) came in to stock up on Sweet Paws Bakery treats, Amelia (Cocker Spaniel) came to pick up some Dogswell treats, Rusty and Hugo (2 Shih tzu) signed up for Doggie Daycare and Hugo left sporting a new Gators jersey, Phoebe (Boxer puppy) came to pick up her Red Dingo tag and some Dogswell treats, and Buddy, Lucy, and Willy (3 Cocker Spaniels) came in to finalize Lucy's birthday party at Sweet Paws Bakery. I want to say Thank you to all my wonderful customers for making my job so fun. The adorable dogs in the picture to the left is Hugo and Rusty.

The Gators Football Season starts in 8 days!

I absolutely love Dublin Dog collars! They are waterproof, they won't smell, and they will always look brand new. Dublin Dog collars are the original all style, no stink collar. They are made with a special material that cleans easily and won't smell.

Shelly and Marley came into the store with their new collars and I had to take a picture and blog about it. Alex, their mom, hand picked their collars. Marley (black cocker spaniel) is wearing Spanish Moss and Shelly (tan cocker spaniel) is wearing Merlot. Since I didn't have that design or color in stock she had to wait just a couple days for it to come in. We just received some more Dublin Dog collars this morning so come pick up your dog one of these unique collars. If you don't see one that you like I can always order you one to your liking.

Hank with his new Dog wheelchair!

Right before the 4th of July one of my parent's dogs, Hank, was diagnosed with back leg paralysis. Hank did not seem to care that his back legs were not working. If he wanted to go somewhere he just dragged his back legs. Matt being the handy person he is decided he was going to build Hank a wheelchair.
We had looked into buying Hank a wheelchair; they run around $500. Once Matt saw that price he was determined that he would build Hank one for much less. After some fittings with Hank the wheelchair was perfect.

The wheelchair brings Hank's back slightly higher to make sure his legs do not touch the ground. We don't want any sores from his feet rubbing the ground. The wheelchair hooks up in the front to Hank's harness to make sure the wheelchair can keep up with Hank.

Once Hank was hooked up to his wheelchair he took off down the street. He really seems to like his wheelchair. He goes on long walks with his wheelchair everyday. The wheelchair gave Hank the freedom to move again! My family and I are very thankful to Matt for building Hank his wheelchair.

Scamp loving his LA Dog Car Seat!

Lauren, Scamp's mom, sent me this picture of Scamp on her drive home for Summer break. Scamp looks too adorable in his car seat and his Puppia harness. The car seat is very comfortable! Think of it being a bed for your dog but also makes sure your pooch doesn't go flying when you make a sharp turn or sudden stop.

The car seat is molded to fit the exact shape of your car's seat, this seat allow the seat belt to securely surround the front and buckle on the side, with a clip on the back for extra added stability. The seats are constructed of dense upholstery grade foam with an easily removable and washable cover in a Poly Cotton Twill fabric detailed with a white piping. Just clip the attached strap to your dogs harness and you're off! Another great thing about this car seat is that it is Made in the U.S.A.!

Scamp loving his new Outward Hound Tent

Scamp is enjoying his new tent! Scamp's mom, Lauren, wanted to get a tent for her little fluff ball so he and her mom could enjoy the outdoors together. Lauren came to pick up Scamp's tent last week so we decided to set it up in the store to see what Scamp thought. Well as you can see from the picture to the left Scamp loved his new hide out. The tent is great for the beach, a picnic, or even just in the yard.

Bella's 2nd Birthday!

A New Way To Travel With Your Pet!

Many of us think of our pets as part of the family and since they are part of the family we like them to travel with us. Well this summer their is a new way to travel with your pets. Pet Airways is the first pet only airline, where your pet can fly in the comfort of the cabin no matter what size your pet is. How it works is that you drop off your pet at Pet Airways Pet lounge. Then your pet is allowed a potty break before boarding the plane. During the flight a flight attendant checks on your beloved pet every 15 minutes to make sure everything fine. After the flight has landed the pets will then be available to be picked up by its family at the pet lounge. Flights range from $149 to $299. Right now they only travel between 5 cities: New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, Denver, and Los Angeles. They hope to expand to 25 more cities by two years.
Since Gainesville, FL is not near any of the 5 locations that Pet Airways is flying out of I figured I would give you another alternative if you plan on flying with your pet. Air Tran is the least expensive flight for your pet, $69 each way, where you pet can fly in the cabin. They have flights out of Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa.
Have fun traveling with your pets this summer, either in a car or plane. Bringing your pet along with your family adds some adventure to your vacation.

We just received more chews from Merrick! We now have Miss Porky Chews and Texas Toothpicks in addition to our Flossies. The Miss Porky Chews are the largest pig ear I have ever seen and they are only $3 or 4 for $10. The Texas Toothpicks are great for dogs under 50lbs and are a healthy alternative to raw hides. The Texas Toothpicks are $1.50 or 6 for $8. Our flossies are a beef tendon that has a unique design that creates a natural chewing friction against the teeth which helps to clean a dog's teeth. Flossies are $5 or 4 for $18.

We are excited about our new food and treat line made by Dogswell. Dogswell products are made from natural ingredients that contain no wheat, corn, soy, or flour. In an effort to be more Eco friendly Sweet Paws Bakery is composting all kitchen waste from making our yummy treats. This means all egg shells, banana peels, strawberry tops, and other left overs from making our delicious treats are being placed in a compost bin. Eventually these kitchen scraps will turn into rich soil that will be used in my vegetable garden.

By composting and recycling, you can reduce the amount of garbage you generate by up to 80%. Composting is fun because at the end you receive this rich soil making your garden look beautiful and less tax dollars are spent on collection and landfills.

April Events

On April 10th during yappy hour we will be celebrating Easter with an Easter egg hunt around the store. The store will have eggs that have discounts inside hidden around the store. One egg per customer please. Yappy Hour on that Friday will be from 5:30-7pm.

April 19th we will be at the Alachua Spring Festival on Main street in the city of Alachua. Please come visit us from 11-5pm.

Earth day is April 22nd and to celebrate all of our toys, clothing, and spa products that are all natural, organic, hemp, or made with recycled material are 20% off on that Wednesday.

We just got in tough toys called pentapull. They are made with four layers of ballistic nylon. In each leg there is a squeaker! It is great for playing tug, shaking, and throwing.
New boys clothes are in! We have cute designs of fire hydrant, dog bowl, squirrel, monkeys, and alligators.
We will be getting our order of brakefast bowls this week. Our customers and I love this bowl it really helps to slow down dogs from eating too fast. Dogs that ingest their food too fast can get bloat. This is what Marley of Marley and Me passed away of. We have a video at the store now playing so you can watch how well it works with dogs.

Spring is almost here! That means more reasons to be out and about!

Sweet Paws Bakery recommends you should attend these events:

Friday, March 13th: St. Patty's day party during Yappy Hour. We will have bowser beer samples, free treats, and bobbing for hot dogs. Come to the store from 5:30pm-6:30pm to celebrate St. Patrick's day a little early.

Saturday and Sunday, March 21st and 22nd: Haile Plantation Village center is having a jazz and art festival from 10-5pm each day. There will be plenty of music and art to entertain you. Our store will be open during those festival hours.

Thursday, March 26th: The Atrium is having a Paws for the Cause event from 2-4pm that involves fun contests for you and your dog to enter. Beginning at 2:30pm the contests begin for the Best Dressed, Best trick/talent, best owner/ pet look-a-like, and people’s choice. To register your pet please call 378-0773. The Atrium is located at 2431 NW 41st Street behind Thornebrook village.

Just as the dog is walking away to show how not scared he is of the alligator the alligator starts to move. Then the dog gets really scared when the alligator is chasing behind him. I know Parker would not like an alligator being attached to him! He doesn't like it one bit when his flexi is dragging on the ground chasing him.

Dogs are better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don’t ask for money all the time.
3. Are easier to train.
4. Normally come when called.
5. Never ask to drive the car, they don’t wreck the car and they don’t raise your automobile insurance rates.
6. Don’t hang out with drug-using friends.
7. Don’t smoke or drink.
8. Don’t’ want to wear your clothes.
9. Don’t need a ‘gazillion’ dollars for college.
10. Don’t mind a bit when you pass gas.
11. Don’t roll their eyes and say “oh please”.
12. Don’t play weird music at top volume.
13. Don’t have to get a baby sitter when you go out.
14. They listen no matter what you say!
15. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars for Christmas and birthdays.
16. They don’t need to be taken to music lessons or soccer practice.
17. They don’t become embarrassed to be seen with you when they reach adolescence.
18. They don’t ride their skateboards where they should not.

29. They love us unconditionally even when we’re sick in bed or when we have garlic breath…and never shout “I hate you” when you tell them they have to be home by curfew or they can’t have the car or that pair on $200 blue jeans that come faded or torn like the ones already in the closet!
30. At night, you can lock them in their kennel and no will call child Protective Services on you!
31. Dogs never scream at the top of their voices like children do when they play around or get excited.
32. And finally… if they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Trip to North Carolina

Something I have wanted to do for a couple of years is to take the dogs to see snow. I know, how silly! Well I talked my boyfriend Matt into going along for the road trip to North Carolina. As soon as we reached the mountains it was snowing! When we arrived in Beech Mountain I bundled the dogs up in their coats. Abby was sporting a Canine Styles coat that was lined with fleece (very similar to a ski coat) and Parker was cozy in his Monkey Daze Rock Star Hoodie. Abby and Parker took to the snow immediately. I was surprised by this especially since they do not like to be out in the rain. Parker was perplexed by the lack of green grass around but eventually realized that the snow is where he would be using the bathroom. One thing that I would bring next time is boots for the dogs since they kept getting little snowballs in their paws making it hard to walk for extended periods of time without wiping their paws. It was a great trip and the dogs loved it!

We make our treats in small batches and use real peanut butter that is sold directly to consumers, not the paste that has been warned about on recent news alerts. Why should I shop with you instead of Walmart?

One thing that I love about Gainesville is that it is filled with many locally owned businesses that care about the city. In larger cities chain businesses outnumber locally owned businesses 10 to 1. As consumers we should support our local businesses instead of supporting a large chain such as Wal-Mart.
In a recent national advertising campaign by Wal-Mart, they seemed to have deliberately targeted small Pet Boutiques. They basically asked a question, why shop at your local high priced Pet Boutique, when you can get the same high quality products at Wal-Mart? I personally find this humorous since I associate Wal-Mart with Ol' Roy dog food (a dog food that is filled with fillers and not healthy for your dog).
I have to say that Wal-Mart pet products are not the same quality as the lines that I carry in my store nor do they have the customer service that I offer.
I take pride in hand picking all the quality products that I have displayed in my store. I know that my beds may be pricier than Wal-Mart's beds but I also know that they won't fall apart after washing it twice. The clothing that I carry will last after numerous washings this is something that Wal-Mart can not say about their pet clothing.
What I love about shopping locally is the customer service in these businesses. The people who work there are usually the people who own the business so they like to know their customers and make sure their customers are happy with their purchases. Wal-Mart employees will not take the time to explain all their treats and help you pick out the ones that are best suited for your dog. They also are not going to be able to special order a specific size or color that they don't carry so that your baby has the correct size and color that matches their personality.
These are the reasons you should shop at Sweet Paws Bakery instead of Wal-Mart! We as consumers need to support our local businesses because they can provide the quality and the customer service that big chains can not.
